BICTAM Master Lecture on Mechanics & International Excellent Young Scholars Forum Held Online

On 18 July 2022, the 1st BICTAM Master Lecture on Mechanics & International Young Scholars Forum for 2022 was successfully held online. Professor Frank Smith, a fellow of the Royal Society and professor at University College London, was invited to deliver a lecture. More than 290 experts and scholars from 11 countries, including China, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, France, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Brazil, attended the Symposium through online platform Zoom. The event’s live streaming platform attracted over 4,400 views. Professor Xi-qiao Feng, Vice President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and Secretary-General of BICTAM, attended the event and gave an opening speech. The whole event was chaired by Professor Zhan Wang, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Xi-qiao Feng, on behalf of BICTAM, extended his heartfelt thanks to the invited speakers and warm welcome to the online participants. Then, Professor Feng reviewed the founding of BICTAM and introduced the origin of “BICTAM Master Lecture Series”, which gave the participants an in-depth understanding of the BICTAM and the lecture. He pointed out that BICTAM is one of the two “International Centers for Mechanics” affiliated to IUTAM, and “BICTAM Master Lecture Series” has been established as its brand academic activity since 2016. The event aims to provide opportunities for young scholars in the mechanics community to interact with distinguished scientists worldwide and furthermore to encourage and promote academic exchanges in the fields of mechanics. Finally, he mentioned that due to the epidemic, the event was held online. He looked forward to meeting the participants in person.

After the opening speech, fluid dynamist and applied mathematician Frank Smith delivered an invited lecture titled “Modelling fluid/body interactions”. He was selected as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1984 and has made significant achievements in boundary-layer theory and hydrodynamic modelling. After that, Associate Professor Wengang Qi from Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Assistant Professor Yulin Pan from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, presented lectures entitled “Wave/current-monopile-seabed coupling effects: scour & liquefaction” and “Wave turbulence from a simple generic wave equation” respectively.

In the discussion session, the speakers were very open to sharing their research experience and specifically answered the questions. The three-hour lecture was rich in content and academic atmosphere. Participants were deeply inspired and motivated. During the lecture, Professor Zhan Wang also introduced Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letters (TAML), an official publication of the Center.
